Mid-Century Homes on the Ridges Above the Tamaki Estuary
St Johns sits on a ridge between Meadowbank, Glen Innes and Mount Wellington, and many of its homes enjoy outlooks toward the Tamaki estuary. Much of the housing dates from the mid-twentieth century, with weatherboard and brick-and-tile homes on sections that range from gentle slopes to steep banks. The mix of ridge-top and hillside sites means a driveway or path here rarely sits on level ground.
Original driveways on these streets tend to be steep and narrow, sometimes poured with little thought for drainage. Over decades, water running down the surface has undermined edges and washed out the base, leaving cracks and voids beneath the slab. When we renew a driveway, we strip it back, rebuild the base and design the surface so that it sheds water in a controlled way, rather than allowing it to flow where it has caused damage before.
Retaining is part of most jobs. Properties on sloping ground often have older timber or block walls that are leaning, rotting or failing, and concrete work around them has to take that into account. We tell you honestly if a wall needs attention before new concrete goes against it, and we can build the replacement walls and footings as part of the same project.
Steps and paths are common on these hills, linking street level to the house and the garden. We build concrete steps with even risers and treads and non-slip finishes, and we think about lighting and handrail positions so that they are comfortable and safe to use at night or in wet weather.
Clay Slopes, Slips and the Importance of Drainage in St Johns
The ground in St Johns is largely clay, and clay on a slope needs respect. It holds water, swells and shrinks with the weather and can slip when saturated, especially if water is allowed to collect behind walls or under slabs. Most concrete failures on hillside sites trace back to water, so our approach starts with drainage.
On a sloping section we look at where water comes from and where it goes: roof run-off, surface flow from higher properties, and groundwater seeping through the bank. We plan drains, subsoil lines and falls so water is led away from slabs and walls, and we raise any concerns about neighbouring or council drainage before work begins.
Where a bank shows signs of movement, such as cracking in the ground, leaning fences or trees, or walls that have shifted, we recommend an engineer’s assessment before building. We do not pour new concrete over unstable ground, and we would rather tell you about a problem than cover it up.
Working on a ridge-top street also limits access. Narrow roads, steep inclines and limited parking all affect where trucks and pumps can stand. We plan the delivery, the pump set-up and the crew’s access in advance, and we make sure neighbours are aware of any short-term road restrictions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Got Any Questions? Read Our FAQ
Thinking about concrete work at a St Johns property? These are the questions we hear most from St Johns homeowners, answered plainly.
If your question is specific to your section, your access or your budget, contact us and one of our team will talk it through with you.
What causes a concrete driveway to slip or crack on a hill?
Water is usually the cause. It washes out the base, softens the clay beneath the slab and leaves unsupported edges that crack. Good drainage and a compacted base prevent this.
Can you build a retaining wall and driveway together in St Johns?
Yes. Designing the wall, footing, drainage and slab as one system is more reliable than building them separately.
How do I know if a bank is stable enough to build near?
Signs of movement include cracks in the ground, leaning walls or fences and tilted trees. If you see these, an engineer’s assessment is wise before any new work.
Can you build concrete steps from the street up to the house?
Yes. We build steps with consistent risers and treads, solid footings and a non-slip finish, planned around handrails and lighting.
Can you fix a sunken or washed-out concrete path on a slope?
Yes. We find where the water is getting under the slab, rebuild the base, add drainage where needed and pour a new surface set to shed water in a controlled way.

We are so glad we found Ash from Auckland Pathways for our dig, level, and pile hole drill domestic job. His skill and accuracy as an operator was outstanding in a very limited and difficult space. The job turned out brilliantly. More than that I was most impressed by his attitude, communication and care in all that he did. From the first contact Ash was helpful, clear and informative. He turned up on time as promised and respected the surrounding properties so well (very important to us as we were accessing our site dig through our neighbour’s property. Ash is a great guy and I would use him again anytime I needed earthworks done. I highly recommend him - especially when you want a precise, quality job done by someone with an attitude and values that match his skill. I wish him well with his business!Posted on Google![]()

Can not recommend highly enough. We had Ash come out and excavate an area in our front yard (including a large stump) to make more useable space, and prepare for rebuilding our retaining. Right from the first visit Ash was a consummate professional, offered his opinion on how best to deal with the job and once he got started his experience shone. Ash is an operator with exceptional skill. His grading and levelling work is as good as it gets and his efficiency in the machine is a pleasure to witness. If you are looking for a team that knows what they are doing and get it done right, look no further.Posted on Google![]()

Ash and his team came out to my residential driveway which was 25 metres and sorted the whole thing for me and was very prompt with his contact and service. Very happy with the service would 5/5 recommend to anyone thinking of doing a renovation or repair asphalt or concrete.
