Villa Streets, Ribbon Driveways and Tight Frontages

Mount Eden is one of Auckland’s classic villa suburbs, with streets of timber homes from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries packed onto narrow sections close to the city. Many were built before cars were common, and the driveways that came later were squeezed in beside or in front of the house, often as two parallel concrete strips known as ribbon driveways.

Ribbon driveways are a practical answer to a narrow section, and they are common here. They allow more lawn or planting and less hard surface, but they have to be built precisely, with the two strips at the right spacing for a car’s wheels and with a base that does not move. We set them out carefully, form them straight and finish them neatly, and we can also replace a worn ribbon drive with a full-width one if that suits the property better.

Frontages are tight, with little room between the footpath and the front door. Concrete paths, steps and entry areas have to be built to fit, with levels that meet the verandah and the street. We measure and level carefully, keep the finish consistent with the house and avoid blocking the footpath for longer than is needed.

Many Mount Eden homes have had previous owners add paths, patios and steps over the decades, and the concrete on a property may be a patchwork of ages and quality. We assess what is there before quoting, and we are open about what needs to be replaced, what can stay and how to blend new work with the old.

Volcanic Ground, Stone Walls and Tree Protection Around Maungawhau

Mount Eden is built on and around a volcanic cone, and the ground reflects that. Volcanic soil and scoria are common, and some sections have basalt close to the surface. This can make excavation harder than it first looks, but it also gives good drainage and firm ground in many places. We dig and check the ground before we commit to a base design, and we plan the equipment and time needed to excavate through stone if it is present.

Old volcanic stone walls are a hallmark of the suburb, and many properties have them along their boundaries or around gardens. They are valuable and often fragile. Where concrete is to be placed near or against a stone wall, we protect it, avoid undermining its footing and set drainage so that water is not channelled behind it. If a wall needs repair or rebuilding as part of the project, we can discuss options.

Mount Eden has many large trees, including significant and protected specimens on both private and public land. Their roots can lift old concrete, and some trees cannot be disturbed without permission. We plan excavation near trees carefully, use hand-digging around roots and recommend taking advice from an arborist for large or protected trees.

Much of Mount Eden is also covered by character area provisions, which can apply to work visible from the street. We suggest checking with the council on what applies to your driveway or frontage before work starts, and we are happy to work to what is required so that the project proceeds smoothly.

What is a ribbon driveway and can you build one in Mount Eden?
A ribbon driveway is two parallel concrete strips for a car’s wheels with grass or planting between them. We build them to the correct spacing and finish, and we can also replace one with a full-width driveway if you prefer.
Yes. We plan access, protect the house and fences and rebuild the driveway on a proper base, with levels set to meet the street and the garage.
We protect the wall, avoid undermining its footing and set drainage so that water does not collect behind it.
Yes. We allow for the extra time and use suitable equipment, and we flag likely rock at the quote stage.
Where the section allows it, yes. We measure the space, check how much hard surface suits the property and plan a turning area or widened apron so you are not reversing onto the street.

We are so glad we found Ash from Auckland Pathways for our dig, level, and pile hole drill domestic job. His skill and accuracy as an operator was outstanding in a very limited and difficult space. The job turned out brilliantly. More than that I was most impressed by his attitude, communication and care in all that he did. From the first contact Ash was helpful, clear and informative. He turned up on time as promised and respected the surrounding properties so well (very important to us as we were accessing our site dig through our neighbour’s property. Ash is a great guy and I would use him again anytime I needed earthworks done. I highly recommend him - especially when you want a precise, quality job done by someone with an attitude and values that match his skill. I wish him well with his business!

Can not recommend highly enough. We had Ash come out and excavate an area in our front yard (including a large stump) to make more useable space, and prepare for rebuilding our retaining. Right from the first visit Ash was a consummate professional, offered his opinion on how best to deal with the job and once he got started his experience shone. Ash is an operator with exceptional skill. His grading and levelling work is as good as it gets and his efficiency in the machine is a pleasure to witness. If you are looking for a team that knows what they are doing and get it done right, look no further.

Ash and his team came out to my residential driveway which was 25 metres and sorted the whole thing for me and was very prompt with his contact and service. Very happy with the service would 5/5 recommend to anyone thinking of doing a renovation or repair asphalt or concrete.
