Established Homes, Compact Sections and Close Neighbours

Meadowbank lies close to the city between Remuera, St Johns and the Orakei Basin, and it has been a settled residential area for generations. Streets of weatherboard and brick homes from the mid-twentieth century sit alongside older villas and newer infill, and apartment buildings cluster around the railway station. Sections are often compact and many properties have close neighbours on both sides.

On a compact section there is little margin for error. A driveway poured a few centimetres off the boundary or a patio that drains toward a neighbour’s fence causes problems that last. We mark out the boundary and levels carefully, agree them with you and take extra care with formwork and finishing so the concrete stays where it should.

Because many properties are close together, communication with neighbours is part of the job. Concrete trucks, pumps and crews can disrupt a quiet street, and we plan the time of delivery, the location of the truck and the clean-up so that disturbance is limited. We encourage owners to let their neighbours know in advance when a pour is planned.

Smaller jobs are very common here: a short driveway, a path to the back door, a bin pad or a few steps up to a deck. We treat these jobs with the same care as bigger ones, because the quality of a small slab is just as visible. We aim to complete them cleanly and promptly, with minimal mess in a small space.

Sloping Land Toward the Orakei Basin and Kepa Bush

The land in Meadowbank falls away toward the Orakei Basin on one side and the bush gullies around Kepa Road on the other, and many sections have a noticeable slope. A property that looks flat from the street may drop away behind the house, leaving a lower back yard or a bank that needs retaining. Concrete has to be planned with those levels in mind.

Where a driveway or path crosses a fall, we set the surface so water runs where we want it to, not along the shortest route to the neighbour’s house. On steeper sections we may step the slab, add a drain at the base of a slope or form a short retaining wall to hold a level patio. Each solution depends on the site, and we talk the options through with you.

Established gardens and bush near the gullies bring tree roots and shaded, damp ground. Roots can lift slabs, and damp shaded concrete can grow moss and become slippery. We take root issues into account in the base design and recommend finishes with good grip for shady, damp areas, such as a textured broom finish.

Clay soils on slopes can hold water and move seasonally, so base preparation matters. We excavate to firm ground, compact a suitable base and reinforce the slab to cope with ground movement. It takes a little longer than a quick pour, but it keeps the surface flat and crack-free for much longer.

Can you pour a short driveway or path as a small job in Meadowbank?
Yes. Small driveways, paths, bin pads and steps are regular work for us, and we give them the same preparation as bigger jobs.
We mark the boundary with you before we form up, agree levels and keep the formwork within your property so the finished slab sits where it should.
A textured broom finish gives good grip and is easy to keep clear of moss. We can also recommend a sealer for shaded areas.
Yes. We design the footing, drainage and slab together, so the patio is level and the bank behind it is held properly.
A small pour is often done in one or two days, including preparation, depending on access and weather. We tell you the schedule at the quote stage.

We are so glad we found Ash from Auckland Pathways for our dig, level, and pile hole drill domestic job. His skill and accuracy as an operator was outstanding in a very limited and difficult space. The job turned out brilliantly. More than that I was most impressed by his attitude, communication and care in all that he did. From the first contact Ash was helpful, clear and informative. He turned up on time as promised and respected the surrounding properties so well (very important to us as we were accessing our site dig through our neighbour’s property. Ash is a great guy and I would use him again anytime I needed earthworks done. I highly recommend him - especially when you want a precise, quality job done by someone with an attitude and values that match his skill. I wish him well with his business!

Can not recommend highly enough. We had Ash come out and excavate an area in our front yard (including a large stump) to make more useable space, and prepare for rebuilding our retaining. Right from the first visit Ash was a consummate professional, offered his opinion on how best to deal with the job and once he got started his experience shone. Ash is an operator with exceptional skill. His grading and levelling work is as good as it gets and his efficiency in the machine is a pleasure to witness. If you are looking for a team that knows what they are doing and get it done right, look no further.

Ash and his team came out to my residential driveway which was 25 metres and sorted the whole thing for me and was very prompt with his contact and service. Very happy with the service would 5/5 recommend to anyone thinking of doing a renovation or repair asphalt or concrete.
