Mid-Century Homes, Infill Sections and Long Rear-Lot Driveways

Mount Wellington developed largely in the middle of the twentieth century, when streets of modest weatherboard and brick homes spread across the land around the volcano and toward the Tamaki River. Many of those original sections were generous, and over the decades a lot of them have been subdivided, leaving rear houses reached by a long, narrow driveway running down the side of the front property.

Those rear-lot driveways are a speciality of this kind of suburb, and they need careful concrete work. A narrow accessway often carries cars for two households, it may run past a neighbour’s bedroom window, and it usually has a boundary fence on both sides. We set the width, falls and joints so that water drains to a gully trap or the street rather than into a neighbour’s section, and we agree the layout with everyone affected before any concrete is poured.

Access on these strips is the other challenge. A concrete truck cannot always drive down the full length, so we plan around a pump, a barrow gang or staged pours, and we protect fences, gateposts and lawns along the way. We also give neighbours notice of the pour day, as an accessway that is out of use for a day or two affects more than one household.

Older homes here frequently have a garage or carport whose slab has cracked or sunk, with oil staining and puddles from years of use. We can break out and replace the slab, rebuild the base and reshape the apron so it meets the driveway cleanly, giving you a floor that lasts and drains properly.

Maungarei's Volcanic Ground, Scoria and Sleepout Slabs

The suburb is built around Maungarei, one of Auckland’s volcanic cones, and the ground reflects that. Volcanic soils, scoria and basalt boulders appear in different parts of the area, sometimes within a single section. Scoria drains well and can be firm, but it is variable, and hitting a boulder part-way through an excavation changes both the method and the time the job takes.

Because of that, we dig and check the pour area before we confirm a base design, and we flag the chance of rock at the quote stage if the site suggests it. Where the ground is open and free-draining, we compact a suitable base and concentrate on getting thickness and reinforcing right. Where it is mixed with softer clay or fill, we adjust the depth and use a stronger specification so the slab does not move unevenly.

Another common project is the slab for a sleepout, studio or granny flat in the back yard. These slabs have to be level, correctly sized and set at the right height for the building that will sit on them, and the edge details matter because the structure is built directly onto the concrete. We work to the builder’s plans, check levels carefully and coordinate the timing so the framing can start as soon as the slab is ready.

Mount Wellington also has a lot of commercial and light industrial land at its edges, and some of our work in the area is for hardstand and yards. Those jobs use thicker slabs and different drainage, and we scope them for the vehicles and loads the site will take, as a domestic specification will not survive daily truck traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got Any Questions? Read Our FAQ

Thinking about concrete work at a Mount Wellington property? These are the questions we hear most from Mount Wellington homeowners, answered plainly.

If your question is specific to your section, your access or your budget, contact us and one of our team will talk it through with you.

How much does it cost to concrete a long driveway to a rear section?
Cost depends on the length, width, thickness, drainage and how a truck or pump can reach the work, and a long accessway has more of each. We quote after walking the site and show the access and drainage work as separate lines.
Driveways use a higher-strength mix than paths or patios, and the right grade depends on the vehicles and the ground. We specify the mix to suit your use and explain it in the quote.
Yes. We break out the old slab if needed, rebuild the base and pour a reinforced floor with falls to the door, so it drains and holds up to cars and storage.
Concrete is walkable within a day or two but keeps gaining strength for weeks, and it reaches most of its strength in about a month. We give you the specific dates for foot traffic and vehicles for your pour.
Yes. We work to the builder’s plans, set the level and edge details exactly and time the pour so framing can start promptly.

We are so glad we found Ash from Auckland Pathways for our dig, level, and pile hole drill domestic job. His skill and accuracy as an operator was outstanding in a very limited and difficult space. The job turned out brilliantly. More than that I was most impressed by his attitude, communication and care in all that he did. From the first contact Ash was helpful, clear and informative. He turned up on time as promised and respected the surrounding properties so well (very important to us as we were accessing our site dig through our neighbour’s property. Ash is a great guy and I would use him again anytime I needed earthworks done. I highly recommend him - especially when you want a precise, quality job done by someone with an attitude and values that match his skill. I wish him well with his business!

Can not recommend highly enough. We had Ash come out and excavate an area in our front yard (including a large stump) to make more useable space, and prepare for rebuilding our retaining. Right from the first visit Ash was a consummate professional, offered his opinion on how best to deal with the job and once he got started his experience shone. Ash is an operator with exceptional skill. His grading and levelling work is as good as it gets and his efficiency in the machine is a pleasure to witness. If you are looking for a team that knows what they are doing and get it done right, look no further.

Ash and his team came out to my residential driveway which was 25 metres and sorted the whole thing for me and was very prompt with his contact and service. Very happy with the service would 5/5 recommend to anyone thinking of doing a renovation or repair asphalt or concrete.
