Concrete Contractor Dannemora
Concrete Work for Dannemora's Hillside Homes and Steep Driveways
Auckland Pathways is the concrete contractor Dannemora homeowners call for steep driveways, terraced patios, retaining and footings. This is a hillside suburb of larger homes, so most jobs involve slopes, levels and retaining, and we plan the whole project around the lie of the land rather than just the slab.

Steep Driveways and Street Levels on Dannemora's Hills
Dannemora is one of East Auckland’s hilliest suburbs. Streets climb and curve around the ridges, and many homes sit well above or below the road, with driveways that run at a sharp angle to reach the garage. Concrete on a steep driveway is a different job from a flat suburban pour. The surface has to give tyres enough grip in the wet, and the gradient has to be gentle enough at the top and bottom that a car does not scrape or lose traction.
Getting those transitions right takes careful setting out. We work out the levels at the road, the garage door and any change in slope in between, then form the concrete so that vehicles can move on and off the driveway comfortably. Finishes that suit a slope, such as a deeper broom texture or exposed aggregate, are worth discussing early, because a smooth, polished-looking surface can be slippery on a wet hill.
Drainage matters a great deal on a slope. A steep driveway will carry water straight toward the garage or down onto the street unless it is designed otherwise. We include cut-off drains, channel drains or crossfalls where they are needed, so water is led to a proper outlet and not left to pour into a neighbour’s section or into the house.
Access on narrow hillside streets is the final piece. Trucks and pumps need somewhere stable to stand, and a steep street can limit where that is. We plan the delivery and pump position before a date is set, and we make sure the pour can be completed safely without blocking the road for longer than necessary.
Terraces, Retaining Walls and Outdoor Areas on Sloping Sections
Most Dannemora homes were built on sites that were cut and filled to create the level areas around them, which is why retaining walls are everywhere. Terraced lawns, raised decks and patios cut into a bank are common features, and a lot of the concrete work we do here is about creating usable flat space on land that does not naturally have it.
When a patio or pad is dug into a slope, the retaining and the concrete need to work together. We assess how much ground the wall will hold back, how water will drain behind it, and what loads will sit on the finished surface. Where needed we build footings and walls ourselves, and we coordinate with an engineer when the height or the surcharge from a driveway or building above calls for it.
The ground under larger hillside homes can vary widely from front to back. Clay, fill that was placed during subdivision and rock in cuttings all behave differently, and a slab that crosses more than one type will move unevenly if the base is not prepared to suit. We dig test areas before we commit to a design and adjust the excavation depth or base material along the length of the job.
Homes in this suburb tend to have well-established gardens, so we take care of what is around the work. We protect lawns and planting with ground sheets, keep excavation to what is necessary, and talk through what happens to the spoil. Finishes can be chosen to blend with natural stone, timber decking or the colours of the house, so the new concrete looks like part of the property.

Frequently Asked Questions
Got Any Questions? Read Our FAQ
Thinking about concrete work at a Dannemora property? These are the questions we hear most from Dannemora homeowners, answered plainly.
If your question is specific to your section, your access or your budget, contact us and one of our team will talk it through with you.
Can you pour a concrete driveway on a steep Dannemora section?
Yes. We set out the gradient, finish and drainage to suit the slope, with attention to the transitions at the road and garage, so vehicles can enter and leave safely and water does not run into the house.
Do I need a building consent for a retaining wall in Dannemora?
Walls above a certain height, or walls carrying a surcharge from a driveway or building, generally need engineering and consent. We can assess your wall and tell you what is likely to apply before you commit.
What colours can I choose for an exposed aggregate driveway?
Exposed aggregate colours come from the stone in the mix, and the options include warm, grey, charcoal and mixed tones. We can show you samples so you can match the stone to your home, roof and fencing before you decide.
How often does an exposed aggregate driveway need sealing?
Sealing protects the stone, brings out its colour and makes the surface easier to clean. Most owners reseal every few years depending on sun, traffic and how the surface weathers, and we can advise on a schedule that suits your driveway.
How wide should a driveway be for two cars?
A double-width driveway is usually wide enough for two cars side by side, but the right width depends on your garage, the slope and any council limits on crossing width. We can mark it out on site so you see it before the pour.

We are so glad we found Ash from Auckland Pathways for our dig, level, and pile hole drill domestic job. His skill and accuracy as an operator was outstanding in a very limited and difficult space. The job turned out brilliantly. More than that I was most impressed by his attitude, communication and care in all that he did. From the first contact Ash was helpful, clear and informative. He turned up on time as promised and respected the surrounding properties so well (very important to us as we were accessing our site dig through our neighbour’s property. Ash is a great guy and I would use him again anytime I needed earthworks done. I highly recommend him - especially when you want a precise, quality job done by someone with an attitude and values that match his skill. I wish him well with his business!Posted on Google![]()

Can not recommend highly enough. We had Ash come out and excavate an area in our front yard (including a large stump) to make more useable space, and prepare for rebuilding our retaining. Right from the first visit Ash was a consummate professional, offered his opinion on how best to deal with the job and once he got started his experience shone. Ash is an operator with exceptional skill. His grading and levelling work is as good as it gets and his efficiency in the machine is a pleasure to witness. If you are looking for a team that knows what they are doing and get it done right, look no further.Posted on Google![]()

Ash and his team came out to my residential driveway which was 25 metres and sorted the whole thing for me and was very prompt with his contact and service. Very happy with the service would 5/5 recommend to anyone thinking of doing a renovation or repair asphalt or concrete.
